I lift my glass. “Here’s to a great evening ahead!”
“Indeed!”
We clink glasses.

eyes are downcast.
“What kind of toast was that?” I ask.
“What do you mean?”
“You didn’t make eye contact when we clinked.”
“I did.”
“You didn’t. I was watching you.”
“Okay…” Her eyes shift left to right. “Is it a big deal?”
“It is.”
“Why?”
“You just jinxed us.”
She knits her eyebrows in confusion. “You don’t come across like the superstitious type.”
“In this case, I’m very superstitious because we’re dealing with something pretty significant here.”
“Care to share? Because it escapes me.”
“I gather you’ve never been to Germany?”
“I’ve never been to Europe.”
“Germans are fairly suspicious. When they raise their drinks to toast, they say, Prost!, but they’re also careful to make eye contact with each other while clinking their glasses.”
“Why is that so important?”
“If you don’t make eye contact while toasting, you’ll have seven years of bad s#x.”
She bursts out laughing.
The sound travels straight to my b@lls.
“You’re pulling my leg,” she says.
I open my mouth to say something provocative, but my plan is thwarted when a man approaching us speaks.
“No, he’s not,” a bartender carrying a charcuterie board says. “Even when they’re piss drunk,
the Germans remain firm in their resolve.” He drops a platter in front of the sexy blonde.
“See,” I say. “I wouldn’t lie about something like that. Germans take s#x seriously.”
The bartender nods. “That, they do.”
Liz shakes her head. “You learn something new every day.”
I lift my glass. “Let’s try that again.”
“Let’s!” She grabs her glass.“It’s torture enough dating in New York City. I don’t need to plague myself with a string of bad lovers for the
foreseeable future.”
